Diamond Advice
EXAMPLE ONE
The diamonds below have identical certificate gradings from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).
Carat weight, Colour, Clarity and Cut (the four C’s) are identical. Polish, Symmetry and Fluorescence are identical.
Yet, diamond ‘A’ is approximately 30% less valuable than diamond ‘B’.
Let us explain in more detail what factors determine this difference.
- Superior weight distribution. Face size: ‘A’ = 7.41mm; ‘B’ = 7.58mm.
- Diamond ‘B’ on the right is clearly whiter than diamond ‘A’ although the GIA has given both diamonds the same colour grade.
- The inclusions in diamond ‘A’ are located in the centre of the stone (circled), whereas in diamond ‘B’ they are smaller and located on the outside edge of the stone (circled, bottom left).
- The diamond marked A has a brown “hue “ something which is not recognized by GIA
EXAMPLE TWO
Two diamonds with the same GIA colour and clarity grades are rarely equal in value.
Which diamond would you rather own?
Clearly the 1.70 carat on the right is more brilliant, has a larger face and is the more valuable diamond, even though the 1.71 has higher GIA colour and clarity grades. Also note that the GIA Polish and Symmetry grades are identical.
A diamond should never be purchased based on certificate grades alone. Similar weight and grade diamonds are invariably not equal in value and the differences can be quite considerable.
